The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under home detention pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.

This included trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a public vigil that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said intelligence from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on online platforms on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or see it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the chance of his "relocation to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the probes revealed a history of arranging to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the US embassy in the federal district, the capital city, is situated around 13km from his dwelling.

Global Responses

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative American leader Donald Trump, causing him to implement a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

Bolsonaro is being detained in a Federal Police station in the capital and will experience a custody hearing on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that he be permitted to depart his residence for medical care, saying he required regular treatment for lung conditions and other ailments.

Background on Conviction

The former president was found guilty of heading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the presidential race to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a scheme which included plans to kill the current president and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was prevented because it didn't receive the endorsement of the military leaders. Lula was inaugurated without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, numerous his backers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The security forces stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The judges found that the protesters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, restore order and bring him back to power.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also banned from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the court case a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the next presidential race.
