Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Forged Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Consultations Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of leading political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
