Seven accused individuals of German left-wing extremist organization stand trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist organization along with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the group was responsible for targeting locations in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

Another militant previously active with the group, Lina E., became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or are in custody.”
