Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the option to challenge specific decisions from the chair umpire, echoing the practice already in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Case in Point

A recent case took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
